Against the Odds

Albino Lechwe - Wilderness SafarisAlthough statistics are hard to come by, since albino animals are few and far between, it seems to make sense that the white colouration of an albino animal is likely to compromise its chances of survival. For predators it makes it difficult to blend into the background, while for prey you end up sticking out in the group, giving a predator something to home in on.

However, this albino lechwe, photographed by Clive Dreyer of Wilderness Safaris, has managed to survive for a number of years in the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana. It’s a true albino with pink eyes as well as white fur and has been seen in a group of 40 animals in the Xini Lagoon area.
