Colourful furnishings from Likoma Island, Malawi

Katundu workshopWhen Victoria visited Likoma Island in Malawi recently she came across Katundu Designs, a small workshop set up by Suzie Lightfoot who owns Kawa Mawa lodge.  She employs local ladies, single mothers from the nearby orphan programme, who use beads made from wood, coconut, shell, ostrich eggs to hand stitch designs onto heavyweight linen.   The colourful pieces are then turned into cushion covers, throws, table runners, table mats, napkins and other small accessories.

As well as making beautiful things Suzie has managed to create employment in a region where jobs are scarce.  Many of the end products are used to furnish camps in Southern Africa but it is also possible to purchase some of these stunning designs.  If you would like to view the items see www.katundu.net
