Getting up Close and Personal with Marine Life at Rocktail Bay

Whale Shark, Rocktail Beach, South AfricaThe Rocktail dive centre reports that this September has been a fantastic month for sightings of many wonderful marine creatures including the illusive Whale shark. These gentle giants are often spotted off the KwaZulu Natal coast at this time of year as they graze on the plankton in the water.

The first whale shark sighting of the month was on the 9th. The divers did their backward roll to begin their dive at Aerial Reef, as they started to descent they saw an eight metre Whale Shark slowly cruising along next to them. They followed it for a while before continuing their descent. The following day saw a smaller Whale Shark approximately 5 metres in length. The divers were travelling back from a dive at Yellowfin Drop and enjoyed their chance to snorkel with this Whale Shark. More sightings for snorkelers and divers continued through the month.

Guests on a boat based safari also had excellent sightings this month of many marine species including Humpback Whales, many of them breaching, Greater Hammerhead Sharks and pods of Bottlenose Dolphins.
