Sarara - bigger & better
Since my colleague Jane’s travels there many years ago, Sarara has been wowing our clients and the odd journalist alike. It’s incredibly remote with stunning views, some wildlife and a great connection with the local Samburu people. Sarara’s managers, Piers and Hilary, have just been in touch to let us know that things are getting better on all fronts with:
- Brand new tents with ensuite bathrooms
- Wildlife viewing including elephant, buffalo, cheetah, wild dog, reticulated giraffe and Grevy zebra
- A sixfold increase in the size of the Namunyak Conservation Trust area to some 850,000 acres in total
This last change took place after the founder members of the trust along with the current Board of Trustees, all local people elected from the Samburu community, assessed the impact and considerable benefits that conservation has brought and voted overwhelmingly to incorporate four additional 'group ranches' into the Namunyak fold. This vast expanse of new country extends some fifty miles further to the north of Sarara and encompasses almost the entire Mathews range forest eco-system
What was once an area dominated by bandits and commercial ivory poachers, in total anarchy, is now widely recognised as one of Kenya's most successful community conservation projects.
