The Pope and The President

Liuwa is a vast open plain to the west of the Zambezi River, on Zambia’s border with Angola. It is home to 30,000 blue wildebeest, herds of zebra, red lechwe, oribi, steinbuck and more. The main predator are hyenas who compete with the wild dog and occasional cheetah. Lions used to be common and there is now a reintroduction programme in place with males having been brought in from Kafue. The birding is wonderful and many water species inhabit the many water filled pans.

The Pope and The PresidentDuring a recent safari, a call came to the camp to say that a VIP would like to call in and use the camp’s facilities. Sure enough Zambia’s president His Excellency, Rupiah Banda and a small entourage turn up to camp minutes later. They’d been visiting Liuwa and were out on a game drive and were obviously desperate for a pit stop. They were offered drinks and sat in the bar chatting like old friends – ‘The Pope’ and the President!
