Ol Kanjau
Ol Kanjau is situated just outside Amboseli National Park in Kenya. It is located on Masai community land and is at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro which is only 30kms away and 4.7kms straight up. There is the opportunity to get extraordinary views of the mountain when she reveals her full face. The bush is predominantly flat-topped acacia tortilis trees and is home to a wide variety of game including elephant.
Ol Kanjau is a traditional safari style tented camp and is kept as simple as possible. The tents are very comfortable with shower and loo facilities at the back at the tent. Showers are bucket style and loos are short-drop. Your hosts here are Mike and Judy Rainy, both of whom are fully qualified safari guides and have been involved with conservation, ecology and wildlife within Kenya for over forty years. Their combined knowledge is phenomenal.
Ol Kanjau means place of the elephants in Masai and the guides make every effort to introduce guests to several of the 52 known matriarchal elephant families in the area. Elephant studies continue here, started by the well-known Cynthia Moss. Game activities include walking with Masai guides and trackers and day trips into Amboseli to appreciate the mosaic of wet and dry lands of this area. The marsh area within the park is particularly good for water birds and the whole area is home to one-third of Kenya's 1,080 bird species.
