Okonjima Bush Villa and Bush Suite
Okonjima is half an hour’s drive off the main B1 road between Windhoek and Etosha. As a drive it’s approximately two and a half hours from Windhoek and three and a half hours from Etosha. It is also accessible by plane, with its own airstrip. The property totals 22,000 hectares with rocky outcrops, scrubby acacia bush and open grass-land.
Accommodation & Facilities
Okonjima Bush Suite is a stunning self contained house with two large ensuite bedrooms, each with air-conditioning and heating. The adjoining bathrooms are very spacious, and have an inside and an outside shower and a bath. The bedrooms are set either side of a spacious living and dining area with roll up canvas sides allowing you to experience the open view to the pool and surrounding bush.
The Okonjima Bush Villa is perfect for large families or groups but can also be taken by individual couples travelling independently. The Bush Villa is comprised of three cottages, a main ‘house’ and separate North and South Suites. The main house has two spacious bedrooms, each with a large bathroom, and one with a mezzanine level with another bed. The lounge and dining room have canvas walls, allowing them to be opened to the view, across the pool and day-sala to the large waterhole beyond. The North and South Suites each have a large air-conditioned and heated bedroom areas and a separate ensuite bathroom. They have their own ‘drinks station’, but would come to the main house for meals or to use the pool etc.
Both the Bush Suite and the Bush Villa have their own private chefs and a fully equipped kitchen, and although are fully catered, guests staying are welcome to help themselves to food and drink whenever they like. Both houses are also fully hosted, and have a private vehicle and guide for exclusive use, and own swimming pool. Some of the double beds at both the Bush Suite and Bush Villa can also be wheeled outside for a ‘Star Bed’ experience.
Wildlife & Activities
Cheetah are the main draw here as Okonjima is the home of the charitable Africat Foundation, whose mission is the rescue and relocation of unwanted or injured cheetah as well as training hand reared cheetah to hunt. They also support leopard research on a number of second and third generation leopards who have always lived on the property, and who are radio-collared. For those staying just one night, the lodge tries to arrange an evening drive to track a collared leopard using telemetry and an insight into the cheetah rehabilitation programme the following morning. Those staying longer can also track cheetah on foot and see Bushman paintings on an interpretive walk.
