Wami River Bush Retreat – Kisampa

Kisampa is a simple ecologically sensitive camp in a privately run community conservancy near the Tanzania coast. The camp is set on a ridge looking south over the floodplains of the Wami River, just to the south of the Saadani National Park. The camp has been established to provide a way for the local people to develop a skills-based cash economy at the same time as protecting their beautiful surroundings.

Accommodation & Facilities
Kisampa has just five open sided thatched bandas, all of which were built by a recently trained local workforce using primarily locally sourced materials. Each banda is sited to take advantage of the breeze, and also the wonderful views from the hilltop. They have big beds, hammocks, plenty of space, an outside bucket shower, and a composting eco loo. The camp has a large pavilion which serves as a dining and lounge room, although meals are eaten outside whenever possible. There is also a small snug to offer guests a little more privacy.

Wildlife & Activities
Kisampa has plenty to offer its visitors, which includes game drives, guided walks, canoeing on the Wami River, bush picnics, bird-watching, visits to Matipwili village, visits to local bee keeping projects, and day trips into the Saadani National Park where game viewing boat trips, game drives and beach picnics are possible. All of the staff employed at the camp are originally from Matipwili, and for many it is their first ever job, and they are very proud of their achievements and of their village, and therefore always keen to welcome visitors to their homes.
