April Fools Safari
This was known April fools safari.
This morning I woke up at 5:30. I got woken up by the hippo’s doing their laughing noises which is quite funny because when ever you say something funny the hippo’s started laughing.
After the hippo’s stopped I went back to sleep (naughty me)Ahh. I got quite cross because after about 5 mins I got woken up by the drum that was for breakfast so I was late. So I quickly got dressed, cleaned my teeth and took my malaria tablets and then went to breakfast.
Then it was off to our morning safari drive.
On the way to find the lions we saw elephants, giraffes, zebras, impala, hippo’s, crocs and also lots of animals we didn’t know the name of especially the birds. But those lions and other big cats were still hiding from the Nelsons. But we still had one more night drive and we knew our guide wouldn’t let us down. Were we to be his April fools safari.
When we were back Dan and I had a coke and mum and dad had a pint of beer don’t tell them I said this but I think they had a bit more than 1 pint of beer.
Lunch was had and soon after it was down to the swimming pool. We spent 2 hours in the pool swimming.
First we played who could do the longest handstand under the water that was me of course. Then we raced each other up and down the pool doing breaststroke.
When we were having so much fun a man came to pick us up from the pool for safety reasons.
We went back to our lodge that we were staying in for 3 days.
Then we heard the drum so we went down to get a snack to fill us up for the night drive. We were having a drink when we saw a new girl that had just arrived at the camp and apparently she was going on the night drive with us.
We put on our life jackets to get to the other side of the river but I don’t mean by swimming other wise I would get eaten by the crocs but I wouldn’t get eaten by the hippo’s because they are vegetarians but they would still kill you if you got too close.
So we got in the speed boat and it was quite windy. When we were on the other side of the river our jeep was ready to go so we got on and off we went. Dad, Dan and I were sitting at the back and mum was sitting in the middle with the lady.
We drove quite fast just to catch up with the lions and other rare animals like that. Sometimes we had to stop because the lady wanted to take pictures of the elephants. At one point I thought that the elephant was going to charge at us (it was a boy elephant boys are always like that).
After 1 hour and a half we found a place to have the picnic. The naughty birds had stopped singing work harder, work harder and were now singing drink larger, drink larger which we all found very funny. I had a Fanta and to eat there were bread rolls with red and green peppers in but the thing is I didn’t really like peppers. Especially red and green so I secretly hid them behind my back and dropped them on the floor.
We had a 15 minute stop while we had something to drink and something to eat and you could have a loo stop as well (oh by the way there is no toilet where you have a loo stop you just go behind the bush). Before we went off to find those lions we took a few pictures of lots of hippo’s yawning the pictures weren’t very good just because dad took them. If I had taken them they would have been better than they were (not really, dad is really good at photography.)
After we had taken the pictures of the hippo’s we set off to find those lions. It was getting dark so the man holding the torch lit it up.
Suddenly there was a pair off eyes moving at first I thought it was a sign post but it wasn’t so the driver drove as fast as he could and dad said what is it and I shouted it’s a Cheetah but I guess I was wrong because it was a LEOPARD it walked around and it was only about 10 feet away from ME it was so exciting. It had an injured leg so dad and mum were worried that it might go for the easy meal (me).
We followed it for about 15 minutes but then it jumped into the bush. It is so amazing to see a leopard because they are very, very, VERY rare. We didn’t want to tell anyone because then they would all go looking for it and it had already gone.
So we went on. For some reason we stopped because the torch man called Efran saw something. At the start it looked like a rock but then Efran said shhhh so I said what is it and Efran said it’s a lion and I was like oh my goodness are you serious. The lion had 2 cubs only about 1 month old.
Our spotter was so good because he made 2 jeeps go past us in the opposite direction.
Now all we had to see was the male lion.
We also saw a civit which was a fully grown one and it was only about 30cm tall and I thought wow.
Oh my goodness I know I’ve said this but our torch man was so good because he saw a massive croc hiding in the bush pretending to be dead. The croc was about 4 metres long or more. We moved a little too close to the croc and he ran away like a cheetah. If there is a croc Olympics I think that the croc would win.
When we were back at the camp we told the boss called Dodi and he was so happy when he had heard that we had found the lion and he was even happier when he had heard that we had found a leopard.
Wow what a day it had been.
