The Wildebeest Migration & other African Wildlife Events
Wildebeest Migration
The wildebeest migration is the famous one - so magnificent a spectacle in fact that we've given it its own new web page detailing the how, why and when. Some of our favourite Kenyan safari camps still have space during the summer months so if you want to arrange a trip to catch the migration let us know.

Aside from the wildebeest migration there are a number of other natural events we also think are worthy of a mention:
Kalahari Zebra migration, Botswana
Kalahari Zebra migration, Botswana When the rains arrive in the Kalahari between November and December, the whole area is transformed into a green oasis teeming with life. This heralds the arrival of vast herds of Burchell's Zebra onto the Makgadikgadi salt pans in search of fresh grazing and water. The last surviving mammal migration in Southern Africa, and the second biggest in Africa, this spectacular profusion of black and white bodies is a sight well worth adding to a Southern African itinerary.

Brilliant birds, Zambia
Brilliant birds, Zambia Beautiful carmine bee eaters make their nests in the Luangwa river banks in August, September and October. The sky flashes with bright scarlet as they dart to and fro and watching from the banks, or even better, a river hide, is an awesome experience.

Tarangire Migration, Tanzania
Tarangire Migration, Tanzania Lesser known than the wildebeest migration, this is just as impressive and has a more diverse selection of participants. As water levels fall in the Tarangire National Park and on the Masai steppes, a great gathering of wildebeest, zebra, eland and oryx congregates around the Tarangire River. Best viewing time is July and August.

Flamingos in the Rift Valley, Kenya
Flamingos in the Rift Valley, Kenya The vision of a million or more flamingos in one of Kenya's Rift Valley lakes is a truly breathtaking sight. These alkaline and soda lakes, inhospitable to most creatures, provide ideal conditions for the huge flocks of greater and lesser flamingo that come to feed here. Lake Nakuru is probably the most famous, but Lakes Naivasha and Bogoria also offer superb viewing of one of Africa's most glorious sights and a unique safari highlight.

A million bats in Kasanka National Park, Zambia
A million bats in Kasanka National Park, Zambia The end of October heralds the arrival of thousands of straw coloured fruit bats in a remote corner of the Kasanka National Park. Each year they roost in the same specific woodland, feeding on the abundant seasonal fruit and by mid-November they have gathered in truly epic numbers. Millions of bats in full flight against the setting sun is one of Africa's truly unique sights and guests can view this extraordinary spectacle from a special hide set 60 foot up in the tree tops.

Wild flower phenomenon, Namaqualand, Western Cape, South Africa
Wild flower phenomenon, Namaqualand, Western Cape, South Africa Whilst the flowers of Namaqualand aren't of the animal persuasion, they provide a dazzling spectacle none-the-less. It's mostly visited as spring comes to this area in September, and leads to a riot of rainbow shades as millions of flowers emerge into a phenomenal explosion of colour. It's a beautiful area to drive through at a leisurely pace.
