Shiwa House

Shiwa House is located in the heart of northern Zambia, to the north of the North Luangwa National Park, and overlooks Shiwa Ng’andu, the ” Lake of the Royal Crocodiles”. The house was originally designed and built by Sir Stewart Gore-Browne in the 1920s, but fell into disrepair and had been all but abandoned. In November 1999, Charles Harvey, the eldest grandson of Gore-Browne and his wife Jo and children Tom and Emma, bought the house and estate from other family members. This huge restoration project for the house and whole estate, including the local hospital and schools, to their former glory is now well underway.

Accommodation & Facilities
The Harveys now welcome guests in four double rooms with ensuite facilities. All rooms are simple with original hardwood furnishings and paintings. Guests have the freedom to explore the estate and the house including the very comprehensive library and the extensive archive base of documents and photographs which were built up by Gore-Brown during his time at Shiwa. A ten minute drive away is Impandala Farmhouse which can be taken on an exclusive basis.

Wildlife & Activities
The Shiwa estate includes a 10,000 hectare game farm with 22 mammal species, fishing and birding on the lake, historic walks around the estate, horse trails, river walks and day trips to the Kapishya hot springs. The summer days are crisp and clear while during the winter it can be quite cold. Anyone interested in the history of Shiwa should read “The Africa House” by Christina Lamb.
