Ant’s Hill

Ant’s Hill is a unique lodge on a private game reserve in the Waterberg region some three to four hours drive north from Johannesburg. Built on the edge of a cliff, this bush home offers breath-taking views across the Waterberg. Very family focused and flexible to accommodate families’ unique needs, visits can be completely tailor made. Children of all ages are wholeheartedly welcome and can join their parents on all activities.

Accommodation & Facilities
Ant’s Hill is small and intimate and can cater to a maximum of 16 guests either for exclusive use or not. The main lodge boasts a spacious living area and dining room, both with fireplaces. A large verandah and deck overhang the gorge and overlook a waterhole frequented by a variety of wildlife– a perfect spot for early morning breakfasts and evening sundowners.  Ant’s Hill has a variety of cottages each positioned to take advantage of the spectacular views. There are various family units available some rooms are also large enough for children under 11 to share with their parents. Cots are available for infants.

The Family Cottage has three bedrooms, one double with an en-suite bathroom, a twin/double and a loft room with two beds. The second bedroom and loft room share a bathroom. The family cottage sleeps six people with the option to add up to two extra children’s beds.  Family cottage ‘World’s View’ has two en-suite bedrooms (a double and a twin/double room) with private pool. World’s View sleeps four with the option to add up to two additional children’s beds. The ‘Hideaway’ has a king-size four poster bed and can also accommodate two extra beds for children. The Hideaway has a private plunge pool. The ‘Lookout’ has a king-size four poster bed, as well as a day bed that can be used to accommodate a child sharing with their parents.  The ‘Eagles Nest’ is for those with older children and is ideal in conjunction with Lookout as another option to Family Cottage or World’s View. An extra child’s bed can be added.

Ant’s Hill has a small heated communal swimming pool with a child friendly step around the edge and next to this a small garden area where children can play.

Eating & Sleeping
Smaller children are offered separate meal times from the parents. Children are also welcome to have dinner in their dressing gowns and to enjoy dinners together as a family. There are special children’s menus available for children with special dietary needs (prior warning necessary) and high chairs are available. A complimentary babysitting/listening service is available for children of all ages and carried out by a housekeeper. There are also competent and friendly staff who will feed and bath babies. Please discuss your needs with the lodge managers on arrival in order for them to know what your expectations are.

Wildlife & Activities
The area has many different kinds of antelope as well as zebra, sable and buffalo. Activities include guided walks, horseback game viewing and game drives. Bush breakfasts, suppers around open fires or lunches under shady trees are all part of the Ant’s Hill experience.

Specifically for children ….
• Badminton, volleyball, trampoline.
• Toys and games are available to keep young ones occupied.
• There are designated child friendly guides happy to provide special walks for children.
• Horseriding – with almost 70 horses on site, there are horses for all different ages and abilities. Competent children can ride on their own, whilst very small and inexperienced riders can be led by one of the guides. Under four year olds will only be able to go out on a pony in the vicinity of the lodge and not on longer outrides.  Hard hats are available in a variety of sizes but it is recommended that guests bring their own well fitted hats.
• Mountain bikes are available for children aged 12 and older.
