Bird Island

Bird Island is the most northerly of the Seychelles archipelago and a 30 minute flight from Mahe. The privately owned coral island is best known for the one and a half million sooty terns which nest here annually from May to October. Although a paradise for ornithologists, this wildlife sanctuary is completely surrounded by pristine white beach and would suit most travellers.

Accommodation & Facilities
Bird Island Lodge has 24 simple yet comfortable bungalows, each with an en-suite bathroom (large shower and W.C. only), lounge area and its own verandah overlooking the gardens with the ocean beyond. In keeping with Bird Island’s eco-lodge feel there is no mini-fridge, television or air conditioning in the rooms. The lodge has an informal atmosphere and is a blend of relaxation and simplicity in a very natural environment.

Wildlife & Activities
Apart from the sooty terns, Bird Island also has populations of fairy and noddy terns, cardinals, ground doves, mynahs, crested terns and plovers to name a few. The coral reefs that fringe the island are easily accessible and excellent for shallow, shore based snorkeling and can also be explored on a kayak. Paths traverse the island and visitors can wander at their leisure along the nature trails and pristine beaches. Another of the attractions is Esmeralda, once recognised as the heaviest living tortoise in the world. It is possible to fly fish here but guests need to bring their own equipment.
