Kwandwe Uplands Homestead

The 54,000 acre Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is in the heart of South Africa’s malaria-free Eastern Cape and has five separate lodges. It is a safari destination in its own right or could be the natural conclusion or beginning to a journey along the world-famous Garden Route.

Accommodation & Facilities
Kwandwe’s Uplands Homestead was the original house on the reserve and dates from 1905. Lovingly restored, yet retaining all the charm of a previous era, this property offers a wonderful base for families or groups of friends. Decorated with authentic memorabilia and antiques, the three bedroom house has all modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, a full size swimming pool that can be netted for safety and comfortable sitting and dining rooms. Set in a mature garden with vast lawns the property affords views over the surrounding reserve. The Homestead comes with its own safari vehicle and guide who will tailor activities throughout your stay.  A cot is also available for a child up to two years old.  The villa is fenced and the outdoor play areas include a large lawn area for children to run around and play games.

Eating & Sleeping
Children can have separate meal times and a children’s menu is available with fun mealtime favourites such as fish cakes with veggies and home made chips, vegetable soup and freshly baked bread, DIY pizzas with fun toppings and fresh fruit salad. Please advise prior to travel for more specific dietary requests. Child-minders are available with prior arrangement at no additional cost. All child-minders are first-aid trained.

Wildlife & Activities

Kwandwe is home to some intriguing habitats and good wildlife, including lion, black and white rhino, buffalo, elephant and cheetah. Predators are often sighted and there’s a good chance (in the African winter months) of seeing the elusive aardvark. During a stay here guests can enjoy day and night drives, guided bush walks, picnics, bush sundowners and fishing on the river, or can simply choose to do nothing and absorb this vast, private wilderness.

Specifically for children …
• Kwandwe runs a “families Eco-Nect” programme which is tailored to suite children of all ages. Activities are tailored to suit and include kite building, scavenger hunts (incorporated into game drives), making fire with sticks, art activities, treasure hunts and conservation programmes.
• Cricket sets, baseball, rugby and footballs are all available.
• The lounge offers TV with a library of DVDs and games.
