Letaka Safaris
Letaka Safaris operate mobile safaris across the vast expanse of wildlife-rich wilderness in northern Botswana. Using private camp sites in the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Letaka offer guests access to some of the most remote, beautiful, unspoilt and peaceful wildlife habitats in southern Africa. Letaka, which is the Setswana word for a reed, is owned and run by Grant and Brent Reed, who grew up in the bush and know and understand it like few others do.
Accommodation & Facilities
Letaka Safaris offer a variety of superb small-group mobile safaris with a maximum of seven guests per trip, which guarantees a ‘window’ seat for all. The safaris usually run for a minimum of six nights, moving location every three nights, allowing guests to see contrasting habitats and scenery as well as wonderfully varied wildlife and birds. Your camp will be set up on arrival, and consists of 4x3m walk-in sahara style tents with en-suite bathrooms. The family tent is two standard twin tents interlinked via the bathroom. The tent is arranged so that two adults sleep in the front tent in a double / twin bed and two children in the back tent on beds. The back tent where the children sleep is ‘lockable’ so the exit is only through the parent’s tent. Three children can be accommodated in the back tent if required but in that case they would sleep on mattresses on the ground. The bathrooms feature a safari loo and a bucket shower.
Guests sleep on specially designed camp beds, which offer a surprising degree of comfort, and the bathrooms have a bucket shower and a safari loo. The camps have a mess tent, although meals are usually eaten al fresco to make the most of the good weather and starlit skies. On days when the safari changes location, the camp is taken down and moved to the new site during the day, and is ready when the guests arrive in the evening.
Eating & Sleeping
Children can have separate meal times and the chefs will happily cater based around individual needs. Parents can chat to the chefs on arrival and discuss what would suit the kids. Options include chicken, pasta, omelettes etc. If there are specific dietary requirements please advise prior to travel. The tents are positioned close enough to the main area so that parents can hear their children and as such a babysitting or a listening service is not required. Please note that whilst on a mobile safari and the camps are set in wilderness sites and the safety and responsibility of the children falls to the parent.
Wildlife & Activities
Letaka Safaris have some of the best trained and most experienced guides in Botswana, and the wildlife viewing is consequently first class. Daytime game drives in Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park are tailored to suit the group’s interests and previous sightings. The Khwai region offers the chance to go for a night drive, and boat and mokoro (dug-out canoe) trips can also be included in the safari. The wildlife that might be seen in the region includes lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard, giraffe, kudu, zebra, hyena, cheetah, wild dog, wildebeest, waterbuck, warthog, hippo and crocodile, in addition to hundreds of species of birds.aris have some of the best trained and most experienced guides in Botswana, and the wildlife viewing is consequently first class.
Specifically for children …
All the guides are parents themselves and are great with children. The staff will happily set up football games, organise impala poo spitting contests and a lot of other fun activities.
