Sarara House

Sarara House at Sarara Camp is a wonderful bush home with stunning views of the mountains of the Mathews Range in northern Kenya. The house is part of a small lodge which is nestled into the lower slopes of Uarges, the highest peak in the range. The lodge is owned by the local Samburu community and run by Jeremy Bastard whose family has decades of safari experience. This area is a truly remote wilderness and the house is part of the only lodge in more than 1,300 square miles. The place has a most magical feel, and includes the extraordinary seasonal “singing” wells where the Samburu water their cattle. Profits from the lodge are divided among the local community and help to support local households, schools, school bursaries and other group ranch community operations.

Accommodation & Facilities
Sarara House is a beautiful, open-fronted bush home that has been constructed from locally sourced materials. Two tented en-suite bedrooms, a big, luxurious sitting room cum dining room, an upstairs tree house library and a private swimming pool make this the perfect safari getaway. A private waterhole attracts the famous Sarara elephants that come to eat the nutritious acacia pods. The house shares the facilities of the main camp, which include a spacious mess area that overlooks the camp’s natural rock swimming pool. Meals, many of which are prepared from ingredients grown in the camp’s garden, can be eaten in private in the house or at the main camp mess.

Wildlife & Activities
The Namunyak (the ‘place of peace’ in the Samburu language) Conservancy is one of Kenya’s great community conservation and development success stories. It has become a gathering place for large herds of elephant which migrate north from Laikipia. General game is good and leopard are regularly sighted. Wild dog are again being seen in the area. Activities at Loimugi include walks in the mountains and on the plains, day and night game drives, bush breakfasts and dinners, sundowners, visits to the “singing” wells, day trips to Samburu or Shaba Game Reserves, and climbs up the sacred Lolokwe Mountain which is covered with cedar forest and other exotic plants which are endemic to the area. Private flights to Lake Turkana where you can fish for perch, fly-camping and helicopter camping can also be arranged during your stay.
