Tswalu The Motse

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve covers more than 1,200 square kilometres, or 120,000 hectares, on the edge of the Kalahari desert, making it one of the largest privately owned wildlife reserves in South Africa. Tswalu Motse lies at the foot of the Korannaberg mountains facing westwards across the Kalahari.

Accommodation & Facilities
The Motse is designed like an African village, and consists of nine authentic stone walled and thatch-roofed bungalows. Each bungalow is elegantly appointed with indoor and outdoor showers, with views across the Kalahari plains, and private sundecks, creating a rustic feel without compromising its private and luxurious facilities. Three are family rooms accommodating four guests each. Guests can either enjoy meals in the dining room, or in the privacy of their own suite. The lodge has a large heated pool, a walk-in wine cellar stocked with many fine South African wines, and a spa and gym, as well as a luxurious dining room, bar, lounge and library.

Tswalu has two sleep-out platforms. The Malori is about 5 miles from the Motse, and has a thatched roof towards the back of the platform to provide shelter if required, and an ensuite bathroom. Dinner is prepared while the guests enjoy sun-downers and the amazing Kalahari sunsets, and the following morning they can ride, walk or drive back to the lodge. Naledi is located closer to the Korannaberg Mountains, and is simpler in style and a family friendly option, raised well above the ground, and equipped with an ensuite bathroom. Malori must be booked in advance, for an additional charge, while Naledi can be arranged on arrival and is currently complementary.

Wildlife & Activities
Guests can take guided walks across the stunning, silent red dunes. Private wildlife drives in open-sided safari vehicles allow guests excellent wildlife sightings, and can also stop at scenic spots to enjoy an impressive sunset or splendid bush dinner. Bird-watching, star-gazing, rhino tracking and exciting visits to the habituated meerkat dens of Tswalu are just some of the activities on offer. Horseriding gives guests the chance to become one with nature and to experience close encounters with wildlife. Tswalu has a helicopter that can take five guests on scenic flights around the reserve, as well as to other places of interest nearby, which adds a fantastic new dimension to exploring this magnificent part of the Kalahari.
