One country safari – Namibia
If you think you’ve ‘done’ Africa, but haven’t been to Namibia you still have so much to look forward to. This phenomenally beautiful county of spectacular landscapes and unique culture is home to more wildlife than you might imagine. With nearly half the country conserved in parks or community run reserves, Namibia boasts a large lion population, over half the world’s remaining black rhino, and almost a third of the continent’s cheetah population.

Add in the unique desert adapted species and glorious panoramic scenery and it’s quite a destination. The roads are pretty good too so a self-drive or guided itinerary works well alongside the more traditional light aircraft transfers. It’s a one country destination full of surprises with easily enough interest for a two week safari.

It’s Scenically Extraordinary
Most visitors come away from Namibia raving about the scenery, the colours and changing hues. The country is perhaps at its most spectacular in the Namib Naukluft Desert where everywhere you look you’ll see dramatic, arid beauty. The must see highlights are the majestic Sossusvlei Dunes and the wild Skeleton Coast.

Activities Galore
Namibia offers excellent walking with some particularly good rhino tracking options. Visit the coast for kayaking and fishing, while activities in the dune belt include sand boarding, quad biking and hot air ballooning. Etosha National Park is the place for big wildlife, though it’s worth venturing into Damaraland in search of the shy desert elephant. Head north where the Kunene River supports a cast of colourful bird life and the odd crocodile. And after all that, night time star gazing in the 55 million year old Namib Desert will quite simply take your breath away.

Venture into Kaokoland to see an Africa untouched by the modern age where the tiny human population is predominately Himba, ochred and braided guardians of their desert home, who drift in search of elusive grazing for their cattle. Visit Twyfelfontein in semi-desert Damaraland where ancient bushmen paintings crowd together to form one of Africa’s densest and most affecting open air galleries.

Sweep through the desert landscapes on a self-drive itinerary and you’ll feel like a real explorer.
