Mwiba - Secret Serengeti

Everyone has heard of the Serengeti National Park, some of Earth’s most fertile grassland, and its immense herds of migrating wildebeest and zebra. It’s no surprise that visitors flock to see this astonishing spectacle which can make the neighbourhood seem rather congested with vehicles.

In contrast, Mwiba Private Wildlife Reserve has 50,000 hectares of wonderful wilderness, sandwiched between the southern tip of the Serengeti and the remote escarpment above Lake Eyasi, one of the soda lakes of the Great Rift Valley. This beautiful country is also excellent wildlife habitat – rugged, hilly, rocky, and riven with streams and rivers. The numerous springs on Mwiba’s reserve sustain a healthy population of elephant, buffalo, kudu, eland, giraffe, and predators too. Trees are abundant, varied and dramatic, especially the bizarre candelabra euphorbia that cling to the boulders and hillsides, remaining green when deciduous trees are bare. You’ll only see vehicles belonging to Mwiba here, and they will only ever join others at a sighting when granted permission.

Mwiba Lodge is a spectacular haven in this rugged terrain, beautifully and sympathetically built into its environment, and with wonderful views from every part.  The rooms are huge, luxurious, and very well thought out, and mostly overlooking the natural spring-fed pools below the lodge. With a lovely pool, a gym and a spa, Mwiba is well equipped for all needs, and the food is truly exceptional.

With day and night drives, wonderful walking safaris, and the possibility of meeting a few of the amazing Hadzabe people, hunter-gatherers who live an ancient traditional lifestyle in this unforgiving region, Mwiba is a superb private destination in a fantastic part of Tanzania.
